House broken into

February 27th, 2007, 4:51 pm by lig

Today (or maybe it was yesterday since it is after midnight now) someone broke into my house through my bedroom window. As far as I can tell they only stole the jewelry. No one was home (least I think it happened while I was at work) or injured - and my dogs kept the intruders from accessing the rest of the house (the burglars locked the door between the bedroom and the rest of the house). Luckily they didn’t get into the main safe.

My biggest problem that I think will take a while to get over is the sense of vulnerability and invasion of privacy. I have issues with that I guess you could say.

Anyway the cops have come and gone and now I site waiting for the criminalist to show up (the CSI dudes). After that - I will probably be up all night and sleep in the morning. I have a ton of other things to do but - I just don’t want to deal with that now.

I have a couple of comics that I read pretty regularly online - one of which is “Working Daze“. anyway - they are currently running a series on “You know you are a geek when… ” that has had me busting up every time. Since so many of you are like me - I thought you would enjoy them as well.

PHPWomen Update

February 6th, 2007, 1:28 am by lig

Just wanted to drop a quick note to update the world on PHPWomen. During the holidays the site became rather quiet, but then so many of us (myself included) were out doing the holiday/family things and let the PHP world take the back burner.

Since then we have once more started to pick up. We currently have ~180 registered users on our forums (200 is coming quicker then I thought) and Kathy Reid recently made us a custom theme for the site (a forum skin is on its way to unify the site looks).

Regular users are visiting again and new coders are starting to find mentors quietly (I now have a little sis myself). I just recently added a thread to the Member’s Benefits section to help them find each other. Hopefully it helps in some small way to bring and keep women in the field.

I had no clue the oscon 2007 call for participation was open until now and can you believe it ends in Feb 5th? PHP.net didn’t list it until the 29th of Jan - so that gives a person 1 week to write and submit for it… kinda short notice. Would suck if you were on vacation.

Anyway here is the link for submitting a proposal and the currently listed tracks include Linux, PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby, Java, Databases, Desktop Applications, Web Applications (client-side and server-side), Windows, Administration, Security, and Emerging Topics.
