Dad out for a visit

April 30th, 2006, 12:10 am by lig

Well finally someone from our families has come out for a visit (so what if it is very expensive and over 20 hours of flight time ;) ). My Dad went to the Philipines to visit some reletives there, and took a flight out to visit me while he was in the correct side of the world. He arrived last night and will be here for about a week.

I admit - I’m very excited about him coming out here. And the funny part is that Jason’s Mom may also be coming out for a visit (She is going to Hawaii to visit Jason’s Uncle - Guam is 8 more hours Westward). Whether she comes here - or Jason goes there… We are hoping he will get the chance to see her when she is out here.

When are Stored Procedures a Good Thing(tm)?

April 26th, 2006, 4:12 am by lig

Been doing a little research to try and figure out when it is appropriate to use stored procedures in an application. Most of the answers seem to be “It depends”. My question is - “What does it depend on and how much for each?”

Does it depend on the bandwidth limitations, the complexity of the sequences of the SQL statements, the abstraction away from the application/database, the number of languages used to connect to the database, or complexity of the entire system that interacts with the database…

The only situation I can immediately see is if you have a large complex system built from multiple parts in multiple languages and you want a standard API for the data layer. Then I can see all your database interactions being done with stored procedures… but that to me is an extreme case.

Now I realize there are no easy answers to this question - but if anyone would happen to know of any case studies or links on the decision making process involved, I would appreciate it.

Thinktank

April 15th, 2006, 10:38 pm by lig

It seems that Davey has announced and set up his own PHP channel on freenode - #php.thinktank. The goal of the channel is to discuss ideas and concepts of PHP programming - not the syntax and errors. All the associative languages and technologies are also allowed as long as it doesn’t interfere with the discussion. So you can ask questions about Apache configs/modules or discuss better ways of using PHP with Javascript, Ajax and stored procedures or seek opinions on how to implement a design pattern with PHP.

I’ve already added the new channel to my normal listing on start up… Hope to learn a lot from it… Though I am sure more the a bit will simply fly right over my head - least at first. ;)

Summer of Code

April 15th, 2006, 9:18 am by lig

Rasmus posted to the internals mailing list that Google is once again holding it’s “Summer of Code” and he implied in his note that PHP is going to eventually be one of the mentoring organizations. Outstanding!

He also noted

So if you are a student and have an interesting idea for a PHP-related project, start thinking about your proposal.

Lukas Smith also added

A few days ago I started a wiki for PEAR to get organized for this. But not much content has been generated so far. Only some ideas have been kicked around (latest: adding an optional PHP4< ->PHP5 E_STRICT converter to the PEAR installer ;) ).

Lukas Smith PEAR wiki is located at http://oss.backendmedia.com/PEARSummerCode/, but I am unsure if that will be the final place that the PHP Group will use.

I’m definately interested in what will come of it, how many people will submit proposals, and how many and who will step up to be mentors.

Google Calendar

Seems Google has a new toy out - Google Calendar. Seems interesting and very cool. Though I don’t know if I would want every one to know what I was doing all the time… Nice tool though for groups/organizations to publish any happenings in one centralized location though.

A bad day diving

April 9th, 2006, 7:35 am by lig

Went diving again this weekend… and can honestly say had a sucking time. We went to Dadi Beach for some shallow water diving. And I got sea sick as hell. Nothing like wanting to hurl in your resperator.

Anyway didn’t take many pictures but the few that I did I will be adding later in the week along with the pictures from last weekend when we went snorkeling over at the Piti Bomb holes. Hopefully you will like them.

Climbing around in a ceiling

April 6th, 2006, 5:00 am by lig

Well most of this week so far has been dedicated to creating a LAN in a new office my company is opening. Basically I was told Monday at noon that I am supposed to put the network in on Tuesday… Only no one bothered to inform me of this before hand… so off I go Monday afternoon hitting all the computer stores on island looking for parts and estimates (DSL modem, Min 8 port router with a firewall, various cables and a surge protector). None of the computer companies had everything I needed on hand so I pieced and parted the thing on Tuesday from the various stores.

Tuesday and today was spent running the various cables (they layed these little conduits (like 3/4 or 1 inch) that no one knew where they went or where they came out… turned out they were basically useless to me and I ended up running the cables in the ceiling. Oh and them needing it by Tuesday - change revision 1 . It is now needed by next week, but again I wasn’t told this until Tuesday evening. So the basic cables are run, but no electronics will go in until after they move in… and I still need to go find the things that hold the cables to the wall and look nice and pretty…
