today– # it was a VERY bad day

February 28th, 2005, 5:08 am by lig

Today (well actually from about 8PM last night until now) has been incredably bad. Quick summery - house was broken into while we were in it, husbands wallet and money stolen, and dog hit by a car.

Thank goodness no one was hurt (even the dog - though he will be sore for a couple of days) and everyone is safe. I’m trying to keep it all in perspective and simply be thankful, but damn it has been a rough 24 hours.

Quick Start to Databases

February 24th, 2005, 10:47 am by lig

Well my tutorial on databases is finally finished. Written, submitted, proofread, errors corrected, and now finally commited to the CVS of PHPCommunity. If I must say so I think it is pretty good and that it may help some people. It will hopefully gave the reader all the basics they need to work with any database.

Basic outline of it:

  • Introduction
  • Database basics
    • terminology
    • keys
    • indexes
    • granularity of data
    • records are inserted and extracted in a random order
  • ANSI SQL
    • CREATE
    • INSERT
    • SELECT
      • WHERE
      • ORDER BY
      • GROUP BY
    • UPDATE
    • DELETE
  • Working with DB - native vs. PEAR DB
    • Advantages/Disadvantages
    • Connect/Select
    • send a query and get results
    • freeing results/closing connections
  • Conclusion

Hopefully it will be put on the phpcommunity website soon.

Reporting page

February 23rd, 2005, 12:17 am by lig

slowly getting the reporting page going. The logic alone took almost 6000 lines (yeah I use the open and closing brackets on their own line)… add to that the vim folding markers and I am currently sitting at about 6500 lines. Took me a little to figure out the vim folding markers but now that I have - it is much easier to follow. In some areas of the code I am running 6 folds deep!

The reporting tables sql has been made and will be creating the tables today. Then - well then I am going to start getting the reporting features up - which means I will be adding to and modifying code I have already written. In many ways this one page is a program all by itself and I sure hope my boss understands that because it is going to take a while to get it running.

Sigh… after that I have to get the mailing list section up. which again will almost be its own little program. Was hoping I could find a free list manager that I could modify to fit our needs (with due credit of course) but it doesn’t look good.

Why is it that the more I do - the more stuff I see needs to be done? How did I get myself into this?

Damn aircard

February 17th, 2005, 12:23 am by lig

Damn aircard for my laptop doesn’t want to work (Code 12 - not enough free resources). Tried reconfiguring it - no go (all the alternate configurations have the same problem). Guess this means I have to call the company and find out what to do. I hate it when thing do not work.

Edit - talked to the company - and because of SP2 I have to bring my laptop in so they can fiddle with it for about an hour - so the card will work. Grrr - wonder if they will pay me for my lost time?

3050 lines and counting

February 15th, 2005, 6:35 am by lig

So far my reporting page logic is ~3050 lines of code and growing (this will be the largest single page I have ever made). I need to figure out how to do folding with vim. It really isn’t that bad - a bunch of variables is the main reason for it. I finally decided on doing the cartisan product of them in the logic code - instead of being a waste of time and resources like I originally thought - it just means alot of coding for me. Reasons for cartisan product:

  1. make sure my logic can handle any combination of the variables
  2. since it is a bunch of switches and if statements - logically it should run quickly.
  3. to minimize/optimize my data retreival from the Database (could have pulled all the data then removed the records that do not meet the criteria - but what about later when the database has 50,000 records)

I think I’m doing the right thing but if anyone knows of a better way to do it- I am all ears.

Man my fingers hurt - :)

An apology to my husband

February 14th, 2005, 1:54 am by lig

Caution - this message will be personal and probably gooshy. So read on at your own risk.

I want to publicly apologize to my husband. I honestly did not think he would send me flowers for Valentines - he never has before. So what does he do this year…. the one year I didn’t ask for flowers and he sends them. SHHHeeessshhh. :) And what does the card say = “Cause you said I wouldn’t remember”.

Married for almost a decade and the man can still surprise and delight me… guess that is why I still am glad he is in my life.

Roses for Valentines Thank you honey - I love them and you.

fried brains

February 9th, 2005, 9:01 pm by lig

Well My project is coming along honky dory. Have most of the administration area done. Even figured out how to do/track the stuff they want. Have the reporting page main template made also. It was a handful all by itself - 4 areas, with javascript to turn on and off various form input areas and now I have to try to take all the data in and make a report. Not too hard right - but there are so many variables and variations that trying to do it efficently is killing me.

Granted I can read in all the reporting data and remove any that doesn’t fit the criteria (time frames, what is being reported on) and then put it into the format that they want… but that seems like alot of wasted time and resources since the power of a DB is being able to get out of it what you want. So create an SQL statement that does that right… but hat about handling all the variables. Grrr - Almost tempted to just do the cartisian product and give each result an SQL statement to give me what I want… but again that seems like wasted time and resources.

Ahhh - screw it for today - my head hurts and my brain is fried.

Spammers blocked - hopefully

February 7th, 2005, 2:27 pm by lig

Well the measures I tried to block the spammers for my trackbacks didn’t work. So I am now trying something else and it seems to be working. Don’t want to say much more cause it could ruin my luck. Hopefully they are gone.

Back from Siapan

February 6th, 2005, 6:38 pm by lig

Went to Siapan for work and discussed all the thins we needed to. Even came to a few final decisions - so it was a good trip. The guys (and gals) took me around the island and showed me some beautiful areas. I, of course, didn’t have a camera so there are no pictures. And next time I have to remember to bring my snorkel and fins - the reefs are supposed to be spectacular.

Hopefully next time we can sit down again and hammer out how we are all going to handle errors - right now it is a free for all. Oh and one of the Siapan programmers stepped up to the plate (MiGs) as the project lead so hopefully everything will work together now - yeah - right. Just those bumps in the road to worry about. :)

project problems

February 2nd, 2005, 12:50 pm by lig

Unfortunately the person who was translating my site no longer works for my company. She has moved on to another job. Unfortuanely the project manager of my project has also left (no notice - just stopped showing up) so we are currently very short of leadership.

Will be flying to Siapan this weekend to have a round table with the other programmers. Hopefully we will be able to figure out what is going on with our individual projects and also figure out how and where all the parts are to fit together as a whole. I personally think we need to elect/assign/designate a person to be the project lead (but then I am military trained). They will then be in charge of making sure all the parts and pieces come together as a whole and guiding the various teams. Basically having at least 1 person with their eye on the big picture. I would volunteer for it (I’m really interested in project managment) but since I am all alone on Guam and everyone else is in Siapan…. it just would not be a feasible option (can’t move - husband is US military and must be here). Someone in Siapan has to step up.

What is going to happen to the project? Unknown. Who will be running the show - supposedly someone from Japan will be chosen, but then they will still be in Japan and we will still be here. Guess I should get back to my code and worry about all that later.

6.0 Earthquake

February 1st, 2005, 5:55 pm by lig

Well today so far has been pretty interesting. Had a real small earthquake this morning and now a 6.0 in the afternoon. And what do the people here on Guam do…. nothing. No schools are closing, no cautions or advisorys distributed, nothing - just get back to work.

I find it humorous the difference between what is being done here and what would have been done in California if the same earthquake occured. The only damage currently found at work is that a refrigerator shelf fell in one of the drink coolers. Guess it is a good thing that building are made for typhoons - earthquakes don’t bother them that much.

Spammers

February 1st, 2005, 12:43 pm by lig

Spammers on their never ending quest to irritate people have decided that since they can no longer spam the comments area of this blog that they will then use the display of trackbacks to get their message across. Only one problem - I don’t display trackbacks. So all it does is fill up my moderation box. Grrr.

*sigh*

so I have removed the trackback link from the pages and changed my urls to the posts and their comments. Probably won’t stop them but at least I did something. Wish there was a was to block the 5 or 6 ip addresses they use but I haven’t found that.
